The risk of osteoporosis can be determined with a BMD test
The results of your BMD test are used to determine a T-score, which compares your bone density to the average bone density and bone mass of a young healthy woman. T-scores can help you and your healthcare professional learn if:
  • You have low bone mass, a condition called osteopenia.
  • You are at significant risk for postmenopausal osteoporosis or for getting fractures due to bone loss after menopause.
  • You have osteoporosis.
  • Any preventive measures for postmenopausal osteoporosis are working.
  • Any changes need to be made to your current osteopenia prevention or osteoporosis treatment plan.
Know Your T-score

If you have a low T-score (below –1.0) and low estrogen levels, you may well be at risk for developing osteoporosis. It is important to discuss ways to help prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis with your healthcare professional.
